MEN WIN OPENER
September 16, 2000
Amherst, Mass.
The men's team had fun flexing its muscles over the rambling hills of UMass, Amherst's home "apple orchard" course. The early pace was set by Pieck of UMass, but by 2 miles the Terrier duo of Jason Borbet and Jochen Dieckfoss were 1-2 and in a groove. Fredrik Naalsund was in third by the 3 mile mark, with Paul Morrice, Liam Revell, and Dan Coval running together just 7 seconds back.
The UMass course has a lot of ups and downs, slants and bumps, so it's never
too easy to settle in to a smooth running rhythm. Nevertheless, the team showed
a determination to push itself and that, as much as the actual results, was
cause for celebration. By the end of the race, it was a 15 point sweep of the 4
opposing squads. A few of the more pleasant surprises were the strong
performances of new comers Jochen Dieckfoss and Dan Coval, while captain Jay
Borbet had a nice outing, tying for the win with Jochen. Fredrik Naalsund
turned in a good team effort,
as did Liam Revell. Iona transfer Paul Ryan ran a creditable 25:02 while
finishing 14th.. Jordan Jones did himself proud, clocking 25:28, in a real
gutsy effort for his first race in a university uniform.

WOMEN OPEN WITH A WIN
September 16, 2000, Amherst, MA.
The weather was beautiful, and the team travelled the 110 miles to Amherst eager to test itself. Pre-race jitters set in as soon as the van pulled into the parking lot that services the UMass, Amherst home cross country course.
When the time came for the race to begin, the runners toed the line
nervously, waiting for the gun. Right from the
start, the team jumped out to the front. By the time the runners had made their
way up the winding first mile of the
course, it became apparent that the women's team had command of the event.
Kathryn Ireland, Bolpar Vinh, Alicia
Heisel, and Tara Johnson formed a front pack, with Rachel Felton and Lauren
Mattews not far behind, but split by
two runners from UMaine. The middle mile consisted of a sharp incline and
several winding undulations on slanted
grass - the type of surface that makes establishing a smooth running rhythm all
but impossible. At the two mile mile,
Katie Ireland and Bolpar Vinh had pulled ten seconds ahead of Alicia Heisel,
while ten seconds in back of her,
Lauren Matthews worked her way up to fourth, just ahead of Tara Johnson and
Rachel Felton.
The final mile offered a long downhill through the woods and a run across a
flat grass field to the finish line. Katie
Ireland maintained her first place position to record her first individual
cross country victory in 18:19. Just a few
steps behind, also timed in 18:19, was Bolpar Vinh. Rachel Felton used her 800
meter speed on the downhills and
zipped into a third place finish at 18:29, while team captain Alicia Heisel
recorded the fourth in 18:37 and Lauren
Mattews completed the team shut out performance in fifth, running 18:39.
Freshman Tara Johnson was eighth in
18:50, while Emily Hawkins placed 17th. in 19:17 and Jennifer Kehoe 18th. in
19:22 in the 42 person race.
It was an encouraging start. Katie Ireland recorded her first cross country
win, Bolpar Vinh showed an impressive
jump in performance over last year's successful freshman campaign, new comer
Rachel Felton logged in as a
serious player in her first ever race as a Terrier. Captain Alicia Heisel and
Lauren Matthews ran steady races,
opening up their season in fine fashion. Frosh Tara Johnson also showed strong
competitiveness in her first
university race that bodes well for her ability to perform at our level.
