Boston University Men's Cross-Country starts 2000 Campaign with Big Win
9/18/2000
AMHERST, MA (Sept. 18, 2000) -- The Boston
University men's cross country team got the 2000 campaign off on the right
track with a dominating performance on Saturday, September 16th at the Apple
Orchards at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, sweeping the top five and
six of the top 10 positions. The meet also featured University of Maine,
University of Vermont, Central Connecticut, and University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
BU literally ran away with the race. Its
final score of 15 put them 44 points ahead of nearest opponent, Maine, which
closed out the day with 59 points. UMass finished in third with 71 while
Vermont and Central Connecticut finished with 96 and 169, respectively.
Leading the pack were Terrier captain junior
Jason Borbet (Smithtown, NY) and freshman Jochen Dieckfoss (Tubingen, Germany),
who tied for first with a time of 24:08. Junior Dan Coval (Holland PA) was
third with a time of 24:27. Junior Frederick Naalsund (Ski, Norway) finished
fourth in 24:21, while Paul Morrice (Auckland, NZ) rounded out the
Terrier-dominated top five. BU sophomore Liam Revell (Belleville, Ontario) took
eighth place finishing in 24:40.
Junior Paul Ryan (Waltham, VT) took 14th place
with a 25:02 finish, putting seven Terriers in the Top-20 of the 56-man race.
After losing the nucleus of their team after
the 1997 season to graduation, the Terriers finished third in the 1998 America
East Championship meet after eight straight years of conference victories. Last
season, the Terriers showed signs of improvement, placing second in the
conference but finishing out of the Top-10 in the Northeast Regional NCAA meet.
If Saturday's meet is any indication, the road to recovery may be in its final stretch.
