Men Finish Sixth
At NCAA Regionals
Sophomore Jochen Dieckfoss (Tubingen, Germany) finished fifth overall at
Saturday's (November 19th) NCAA Northeast Regional Qualifying Meet at Franklin Park,
which should be good enough to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division 1
Cross-Country Championships in Greenville, SC in a couple of weeks.
The problem is that he will probably not be accompanied by his teammates as
the Terriers finished sixth overall as a team, and it is unlikely the NCAA will
select that many teams.
In all, 36 teams from New England and New
York State were on
hand to try to qualify for the NCAA's, and, as expected, Providence
won the team title with 59 points. Dartmouth
was second with 111, followed by the U.S. Military Academy with 147, Harvard
with 166, Yale with 171, and the Terriers with 224. The rest of the top 10
included Cornell, 242; New Hampshire,
251; Albany, 282; and Manhattan,
306. Finishing ahead of New Hampshire
was a Terrier objective as the Wildcats edged out the Terriers for the team
title at the America East men's cross-country championship two weeks ago.
Dieckfoss, who two weeks earlier had won his second straight America East
individual title, was clocked in 30:00.80, or 4:49
a mile. This time placed him just six seconds behind individual winner Dan
Wilson of the University of Connecticut.
Wilson covered the 10,000-meter
course in 29:44.80, or 4:47 a mile.
The other four Terrier runners whose final standing factored into the team's
final standings included sophomore Dan Coval (Holland,
PA), junior Liam Revell (Belleville,
ONT), senior Paul Ryan (Waltham, VT), and junior
Jordan Jones (Medford).
Coval finished in 41st place overall with a time of 31:12.90 (5:01 a mile), while Revell was just behind him
in 42nd spot in 3:14.50, or 5:01 a
mile, as well. Ryan was 65th in 31:40.30 (5:05
a mile), and Jones was 71st in 31:47.00 (5:06
a mile).
Two other runners also competed for the Terriers. They were senior Jason
Borbet (Smithtown, NY),
who finished 148th in 33:02.80 and senior Fredrik Naalsund (Ski,
Norway), who was 164th
with a time of 33:26.20.
