Shorthanded BU Track Team Beaten By UNH
By Carson Gardner

At first, the lopsided score of 108-57 would lead one to think the Boston University men's track team was completely outmatched by the University of New Hampshire.

However, things are put into better perspective when considering the Terriers managed to dress only 17 athletes, while the Wildcats fielded more than 40.

"Missing team members due to school and other meets hindered the team, definitely," said junior sprinter Matt Adler. "If we had an equal number of people competing, things would have been different."

Indeed, the team was not at full strength. BU's top athlete, Jochen Dieckfoss, was busy trying to qualify for the NCAA championships in the steeplechase in the Mt. Sac Open's university division, while others were unable to appear due to academic priorities.

Dieckfoss' 8:45.5, in addition to being a personal best, was the second-fastest time in BU history. He just missed automatically qualifying for the NCAA championships with one of the fastest times posted this year, though it is almost certain his time will qualify him for the championships next month.

Despite being severely outnumbered, the Terriers were definitely not outgunned. They did not lose a single event in which the team entered more than one competitor. Adler continued his season-long success by winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while fellow junior Chris Brandon won the 400-meter run while finishing a close second to Adler in the 200.

Senior thrower Chris Ferrara was the other Terrier able to come away from
New Hampshire with two wins. He won the shot put by a whopping three feet with a throw of 49' 09.75". He also walked away with the discus title. Junior Michael Corronado finished second to Ferrara in each event for the Terriers.

The women's team fared much the same as the men. Their depleted roster did not allow them to enter seven out of 19 events. As a result, the women lost by a score of 127-53.

Terrier Pamela Pierre not only outran the entire field in the 200-meters, winning by nearly three seconds, she also out-jumped everyone to win the long jump crown. Lauren Warman gave the Terriers their only other sprinting title of the day, winning the 400-meter dash.

The field was the most successful area for the women's team. In addition to
Pierre's long jump win, Mary Ellen Bingham won the triple jump by jumping 11.10 meters. Katie Chen hurled the javelin 39.49 meters, and Jen Holme threw the discus 34.71 meters. Their efforts garnered them each a top spot on the podium.

The meet was a chance for the entire team to become familiar with the new Mooradian Field facility. It was also a chance for everyone to get out and compete, as the duel meet was a tune-up the few remaining meets of the season.

The team will return to
Durham, N.H., for the America East Championships on May 4.
